GARMIN TOPO US 24K COMPARISON SERIES
The US Topo series is a latest generation of topographic maps modeled on the USGS historical 7.5-minute series (created from 1947-1992). We've added the US Topo series to topoView, giving users access to over 3 million downloadable files from 2009 to the present day. The NGMDB project is proud to assist the NGP in bringing these maps to the Web. Geologic and topographic mapping have a long tradition together (see 1888 report).

I would ask them what version of road data comes with the current version, whether the maps can be upgraded (likely will only upgrade roads/poi's) and whether or not it comes with lifetime upgrades - if.

This interface was created by the National Geologic Map Database project (NGMDB), in support of the topographic mapping program, managed by the USGS National Geospatial Program (NGP). Current versions of 24k topo maps are only available by download or sd card and are tied to a single unit. TopoView shows the many and varied older maps of each area, and so is especially useful for historical purposes-for example, the names of some natural and cultural features have changed over time, and the historical names can be found on many of these topographic maps. The most current map of each area is available from The National Map. As the years passed, the USGS produced new map versions of each area. This mapping was done at different levels of detail, in order to support various land use and other purposes. In 1879, the USGS began to map the Nation's topography. I'd like to get one that I could use for hiking as well as biking if one like that exists.TopoView highlights one of the USGS's most important and useful products, the topographic map. Maybe I missed it in one of your other hubs, do you have any recommendations for selecting a GPS. Thus they tend to be gnarly and really fun. They often show roads that dont appear on Topo 24k. Topo Lite does not allow any auto-routing functionality. Garmin has a site somewhere to see the detail, but I failed to find it. I rarely navigate with it, so it works fine for me. I also like that I have the entire united states loaded up, wherever I go. Topo Active allows you to route to POI’s and via roads to a point you drop on the map as long as it’s on the road. I have no experience with 24k but I bought the 100k scale with my device. It’s the only one that can fully navigate to an exact street address. They even make bike mounts for their units. This is one of the key advantages that Topo Full has over Topo Active and Topo Lite. I just set the routing preference to "follow road." Though it won't give audio directions like an auto GPS, the routing arrows are easy enough to follow.
Though I just got my 62, I used my previous 60 on my bike. Hey Bankscottage, good to see you! Most, if not all, of Garmin's units are great for hiking and biking.
